How the Internet of Things Will Change Deliveries

How the Internet of Things Will Change Deliveries

In December we were looking at upcoming trends in the transport industry including an increased reliance on the Internet of Things. And as the new year takes hold, we’ve decided to dig a little deeper into the ways in which the Internet of Things will impact upon deliveries.

Let’s start by defining what’s meant by the term ‘Internet of Things’, or IoT, as it’s often referred to. It encompasses the increasing numbers of devices that can connect wirelessly with each other, exchanging information in real time. And when it comes to deliveries, it’s easy to see the potential for adding real value to supply chains and customers alike.

Increased transparency with real-time tracking data

The Internet of Things is increasingly allowing clients to see where their parcels and packages are in real time at every point in their journey. This eliminates any doubt about their whereabouts or delivery times. And if you’re running a logistics operation, this enables faster and more responsive decision making based on facts rather than suppositions.

Responsive order processing

Keeping track of stock levels has traditionally been expensive and labour intensive, so anything that can trim running costs is bound to be welcomed by business managers. The Internet of Things will increase the effectiveness of our Just in Time distribution service so that your field service engineers have the parts they need ready for their scheduled tasks. Less stock on site means a reduction in business expenses, from warehousing to staffing, and this also reduces the risk of obsolete parts and products being left on the shelves.

On-time deliveries every time

Many time-critical businesses already rely on our In Boot parts delivery service, in which all necessary parts for the day’s work are delivered into technician’s vehicles before the start of their working day. But thanks to the Internet of Things, we anticipate increased demand for our In Night distribution and scheduled and multi-drop deliveries too. Real-time data tracking and analytics will ensure our drivers are always diverted away from traffic hot spots, avoiding potential delays to provide a fast, efficient and responsive service.

Data tracking enables driving habits to be picked up and corrected too, whether that’s allowing engines to idle or driving at speeds that waste fuel. This should lead to a cleaner and greener environment, which is an added benefit for everyone.

Here at GenRev we’re hard at work developing our new Smart Delivery Boxes, which we’re planning to launch in the coming months. It’s our own unique response to the changes we’re seeing within the world of logistics, which shows a steady increase in online shopping and associated deliveries.

Our team are always refining and evolving our services to reflect the changing world of delivery solutions. We carefully listen to our customers to ensure our smart delivery solutions always stay affordable and relevant.
